How To Clean A Hot Towel Cabinet

Posted by Emin Andreasian on

One of the things that clients look forward to most about a spa visit are those fluffy, hot towels that are so relaxing and rejuvenating. However, that towel warmer works hard, and you should take care of it like you take care of your clients. Cleaning the hot towel cabinet is important to ensure that your cabinet stays mold and dirt free, even if you’ve been sure to clean the towels well before putting them in the warmer. It isn’t difficult to clean your hot towel warmer either, and in a few easy steps, you can have it cleaned and sanitized in no time.

What Materials Do You Need?

Before we get started in more detail, you should note that there are several things you should gather beforehand to ensure that your hot towel cabinet stays clean and sanitized. Here are the things you need:

    • A clean towel
    • Rag
    • Soap
    • Warm water
    • Disinfectant

Step One

The first thing you should do is empty the entire hot towel warmer. This means removing the towels and drip tray every night. If you fail to do this, you are setting up basically the ideal breeding ground for mold because of the dark, damp, and warm space. It goes without saying that you don’t want your towels sitting in the mold, even briefly. Once you have removed the towels and drip tray for cleaning, you can begin by wiping down all the surfaces on the inside. If you must, remove the racks as well for a more thorough clean.

Step Two

Next, you are going to want to clean that rubber gasket that seals the door. Just as you wiped down the inside of the hot towel cabinet, you will need to firmly wipe down this rubber. The best way to do it is by using a damp rag. Be sure the pull the rubber gasket forward to clean behind it and in all the crevices, because you never know what mold or detritus might be left behind.

Step Three

Empty that drip tray. You don’t want that water to be left inside to accrue mold and mildew inside your cabinet. A good rule of thumb is to frequently empty the drip tray and wash it thoroughly with warm water and soap to completely clean and disinfect the tray. You will want to give the tray a chance to dry completely before you return it to the cabinet, and many spa owners will simply prop up the tray until it has a chance to dry.

Step Four

Lastly, you are going to want to clean the outside of the hot towel warmer. Using a damp rag, simply give the outside surfaces a good wipe down while leaving the door to the cabinet open. Remember, you want everything to dry completely before returning the drip tray, rack, and towels.

Conclusion

A clean hot towel cabinet is the mark of a professional facility where the health and well-being of the client is truly paramount -- even in spaces that the client may never see, such as the inside of your hot towel cabinet. You want your clients to be using clean towels from a clean warmer that is totally sanitized and free of mold and mildew. As you can see, it isn’t difficult to maintain the cleanliness of your cabinet either… especially if you stay on top of it and don’t let it slip for longer than you should. Just a few cleanings per week will help keep your cabinet in great shape -- and your towels will be clean, warm and pure.
